May the holiday season be of good cheer, good health, joy,
peace, and gratefulness.

In the five years that this monthly newsletter has been
distributed, there have been but two mailings other than the
newsletter. Both were sent this month and were directed to
users of the Raise Responsibility System itself:
http://marvinmarshall.com/rrsystem.htm.

Following are a few points about it:

1. It is the only discipline approach that is a total system
(three parts forming a whole: teaching, asking, and
eliciting), rather than a list of techniques, strategies,… >>>

In updating my computer to a new operating system, all of my

recent e-mail files were lost. If you had contacted me and

did not receive a response, the reason is that your message

where.

Jamie Turner of Fair Haven, New Jersey, recently forwarded

Last month was a traveling month for my wife and me. We

landed in Australia on the first of September and returned

home at the end of the month. The one and two-day

presentations took us to the Gold Coast, Sydney, Newcastle,

and Adelaide. It was a magnificent month thanks to Judy

Hatswell, a senior faculty Member of the William Glasser

While presenting in Warren, New Jersey, I had the pleasure of meeting Vanita

Braver, M.D., a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She recently sent me her

first two books from her planned nine book series, “Teach Your Children Well.”

Since the foundation of my approach is to foster responsibility and since I

present and keynote at many character education conferences, I was delighted

It’s nice to travel; it’s

good to return home.

My speaking at a private school and at two teacher training universities in

Beijing and Kunming, China last month was as

culturally informative as my previous presentations in Japan, Korea, and

Malaysia.

Construction in Beijing is

explosive in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. The mix of an emerging

February found me in

I recently returned from

Seoul, South Korea (officially The Republic of Korea–as differentiated from the

Democratic

People’s Republic of Korea, or North Korea).

The nine presentations in eleven days kept me rather busy, but learning

different cultures has always been of interest to me, and when I present I

always learn from participants.

My presentations were to English speaking teachers and parents at international

schools. Their students are

considered Third Culture Kids (TCK). … >>>

I received the following

e-mail this past Monday, January 3, and am sharing it with you in hopes that

your 2005 may be as successful as this teacher and parent reported.

When my elementary school

first implemented the Raise Responsibility System, I was somewhat apprehensive

about how

such a program would work in my classroom. I have always felt that I created a

positive learning environment in my

class and, frankly, this system … >>>

A mother passing by her

daughter’s bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything

was picked up. Then she saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of

the bed. It was addressed, “Mom.” With the worst premonition, she opened the

envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:

Dear Mom,

It is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you. I had to elope with my… >>>

I presented two sessions at

the annual conference of the

National Middle School Association in Minneapolis last week.

The day after the first presentation, an attendee related

the following to me:

I used your approach on my

daughter last night. She had

often picked on our cat in a rather mean way and was doing

so again. I ASKED her if she was bullying the cat OR being

respectful.

Please consider this a personal thank you for joining the increasing number of leaders, parents, teachers, schools, and school districts who believe that promoting responsibility is significantly more important in the 21st century than aiming at obedience by using coercive and manipulative approaches.

The word is spreading.

The most referenced book in education is Dr. Harry Wong and
Dr. Rosemary Wong’s book, “How to Be an Effective Teacher:
The First Days of School.” … >>>

This month marks the start

of the academic school year for many readers of this e-zine. Although learning

is itself self-renewing, a new school year is doubly so for classroom teachers

because of greeting a fresh crop of students. Even in schools where classes

“loop” (have the same teacher for more than one year), the summer break offers

respite and renewal.

Returning after a summer “break” reminds me of what Stephen Covey refers … >>>

This past Monday–at the

invitation of the president of the Association for Teacher Educators–I spoke in

Cambridge, Massachusetts to college and university professors who prepare future

teachers.

I suggested that they have a dilemma. They wish to expose future teachers to

various approaches to discipline. With this in mind, they use textbooks which

share a number of discipline approaches, such as C.C..Charles’ “Building

Classroom Discipline.” (Incidentally, the Raise

Responsibility System is included in … >>>

At a recent Texas conference, an elementary school assistant principal approached me and said, and I quote verbatim, “I’m addicted to you.” Needless to say, this captured my attention, and I asked for an explanation to this rather embarrassing compliment.

She explained that after reading the Kappan article, she decided to try the approach.

After she told me of her immediate successes using the levels of social development, I encouraged her to consider writing an article which perhaps could be … >>>
