Discipline Without Stress Newsletter – June 2004

Volume 4 Number 6

While in Austin, Texas Friday morning, I watched the events of the national day of mourning for former

President Ronald Wilson Reagan, the United States of America’s 40th to be honored in that position.

Anyone watching the events of the last few days and especially Friday’s ceremony at the the Washington  National Cathedral would have been truly inspired. Eulogies from former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain, Brian Mulroney of Canada, former President George Herbert Walker Bush, and President George Walker Bush were eloquent in their description of how Ronald Reagan lifted the nation and the world by his infectious positivity and firm belief that mankind is capable of living free in democracy.

I recently asked a principal

in New Jersey to write what she had shared with her district about her

experiences with the Raise Responsibility System. I intend to submit her article

with some additions to the journal of the National Association of Elementary

School Principals (NAESP).

I will be giving two presentations at the NAESP conference later this month in

San Francisco, and the article is such a wonderful testimonial to the

effectiveness of the approach that I have reproduced it … >>>

As the years quickly pass,

the tendency to make New Year resolutions decreases. However, I encourage you to

make at least two resolutions–even if you do not implement them. The reason is

that resolutions carry an inference that you can change. This can be extended to

thoughts of having control in how one reacts to situations in life–that one is

not a victim.

Resolutions bring a sense of empowerment, that you are the master of your life.

A young man on vacation was

staring at the calm, blue sea

thinking about lunch. A small boat laden with a large

Yellowfin tuna docked near the pretty Mexican village. A

lone fisherman jumped ashore.

“That¹s a great catch,” said the tourist. “How long did it

take you?” “Not so long,” said the fisherman. “Why didn¹t

you stay out longer and catch more fish?” “This one¹s enough

to keep my family provided for,” came the response.

“What do you do … >>>

I just returned from a

presentation to 500 middle school teachers and administrators at the National

Middle School Association (NMSA) conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Our hotel was

adjacent to CNN (Cable News Network) headquarters.

During the CNN tour, I was reminded that the company, started in 1980 by the

visionary Ted Turner, is no longer owned by him. He sold the company for

$900,000,000. Mr. Turner has started a restaurant chain that serves bison

burgers. Last June I spoke to the Montana Behavior Institute and learned then

that Ted Turner … >>>

for students to choose to behave at levels C and D}. Her first grade son is very

Laura Hillenbrand’s award-winning book,

“Seabiscuit: An American Legend,” was first made into a PBS documentary and then

into a recently-released motion picture. The book has been referred to as the

best sports book ever written.

Seabiscuit–a descendant of the mighty Man o’ War–was an undersized,

crooked-legged racehorse but was the subject of the most newspaper column inches

in 1938. The horse was nothing short of a cultural icon in America.

In a test race, Seabiscuit once ran … >>>

Cavett Roberts, the founding

president of the National Speakers Association once asked, “Whatever happened to

the old wooden bucket?” It was the hallmark of an era. Songs were written about

it. But the romance of the oaken bucket was short lived. It had no permanent

franchise on existence.

The galvanized tin bucket replaced it. Although the tin bucket did not look so

glamorous, it was lighter and cheaper. But even the tin bucket had no

permanence. It was also replaced. … >>>

Last Saturday on May 3, I had the pleasure of presenting the RAISE RESPONSIBILITY SYSTEM to an elementary school staff in the morning and then to parents in the afternoon in West Palm Beach, Florida. The principal, a true educational leader, requested that I include my videotape that is part of the IN-HOUSE STAFF DEVELOPMENT PACKAGE.

Having the 90-minute videocassette would allow teachers to review the three principles to practice and the three parts of the RAISE RESPONSIBILITY SYSTEM. In addition, … >>>

As people in leadership positions become attuned to my approach of noncoercion, high expectations, and empowerment, they often comment that I should write a book for the BUSINESS

ARENA.

The mantra in the book industry is that a book is sold by its cover and/or byits title. I would appreciate your assistance in choosing a title. It will take only a moment of your time.

If you are in business, government, or in any field where you are responsible for other … >>>

“I think; therefore, I am” is perhaps the most famous statement in the history of philosophy. The statement by Rene Descartes, written in 1637, still has a significant influence on our thinking in the 21st century.

The statement is the foundation of Cartesian dualism that separates the brain from the body. In his book, “Descartes’ Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain,” Antonio Damasio challenges Descartes’ pronouncement.

Damasio, a Portugese-born M.D. and Ph.D., professor of Neurology, and head of the department of neurology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, … >>>

Speaking engagements this month take me to Rome, Naples, Venice, Sicily, Spain, and England. Upon returning, I immediately fly to Texas to speak to the Texas Middle School Association.

My presentations will be about my simple-to-implement system that rests upon teaching a hierarchy of social development so people can understand and articulate the difference between external and internal motivation.

I will discuss the three principles I practice (positivity, choice, and reflection) and the three parts of the RAISE RESPONSIBILITY SYSTEM … >>>

January is named after Janus, the Roman mythical god and guardian of portals and patrons of beginnings and endings. He is shown with two faces, one in front and the other at the back of his head.

So I start the year looking back with thanks as I look forward to this new year:

  • For the wife who says it’s hot dogs tonight Because she is home with me, not with someone else
  • For the teenager who is complaining about doing dishes Because that means she is at home and not
